Sharon Carter has a plan, “and it’s not for the greater good”

Emily VanCamp recently reprised her role as Sharon Carter in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier on Disney+. To say that she killed it would be an understatement. I’m so used to watching her play the role of a nurse on Fox’s The Resident that I forgot just how insanely cool she actually is.

The last time we saw VanCamp’s Carter was back in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, when she was on Team Steve Rogers. While some characters were pardoned for their participation in the events of that movie, Sharon Carter was not so lucky. In The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, we catch up with Sharon in the city of Madripoor, where she’s been hiding out. She’s got a cushy life but is obviously resentful that she wasn’t pardoned and couldn’t return home, and who could blame her?

By the season finale, however, all is forgiven and Carter is not only pardoned but given a high-ranking job in the U.S. government. That’s amazing, but it was also revealed that she was the elusive Power Broker we heard about all season. Sharon ended the series by calling someone and saying that she was ready to sell all kinds of U.S. secrets, so it looks like her days as a “good guy” are over.

Emily VanCamp talks Sharon Carter’s villainous future

Speaking with Marvel Entertainment, Emily VanCamp and Falcon and the Winter Soldier co-executive producer Zoie Nagelhout talked about what’s next for Sharon. “The conflict doesn’t really involve Sam and Bucky; she’s not out to get the two of them,” Nagelhout explained. “She’s on her own path, her own mission. It wasn’t necessary to have to complicate her relationship with those guys. She can help them and also be the Power Broker. It was interesting to us that there be duality in the character.”

So Bucky and Sam are safe from Sharon, but will she be safe from them once they learn her secret?

VanCamp says that her character “has a much bigger plan and it’s not for the greater good like it used to be”. That’s heartbreaking. Can we get the old Sharon back? What would Steve Rogers say if he saw her now?

And who was Sharon speaking to at the end of the finale? Is it someone we know or might see in future Marvel films? Perhaps another known villain in the MCU?

Or perhaps the Sharon we see is actually a Skrull alien in disguise. That would explain the dramatic shift in her behavior, and we got a Skrull post-credit scene in the WandaVision finale. We may see more of Sharon’s story in Secret Invasion, which will follow Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn’s Skrull character Talos.

And since we’re talking about Secret Invasion, let’s not forget that Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ character, Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine, was romantically involved with Fury in the comics. Maybe we’ll get a culmination of MCU villains gathering together in this series. Add in the recent announcements that Olivia Colman and Emilia Clarke are joining the cast, and it’s looking very exciting!
