Live-action Spider-Man spin-off series Silk gets filming start date

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is the biggest thing in Hollywood, and has inspired a host of imitators. Sony is trying to make a cinematic universe based on all things Spider-Man, with upcoming movies like Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Morbius and Into the Spiderverse 2 leading the charge. They’re calling it the SPUMC (Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters).

There are TV shows in the works, too, including a live-action series following Cindy Moon, aka Silk! And now, reports suggest filming will commence very soon. According to Discussing Film, Silk will start shooting in August and conclude by early 2022. If all goes according to plan, the show will premiere at the latter end of 2022.

While it’s good to hear things are moving forward, there’s still an awful lot of things we don’t know. Apparently, there have been some shifts behind the scenes. Initially, Variety reported that Lauren Moon (Atypical) was in talks to write the series. There seems to have been a shake-up since then, with The Illuminerdi recently revealing that Sang Kyu Kim (Altered Carbon) is now showrunner and executive producer. They also believe Adeline Rudolph (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Riverdale) has been approached as a potential candidate to play the titular role. So far, there have been no cast announcements. Into the Spider-Verse veterans Phil Lord and Chris Miller will executive produce.

Amazon Prime Video has acquired the rights to air Silk on their service. With shows like The Boys and more recently Invincible, they’re taking steps to carve out their own superhero empire away from the MCU on Disney+.

Spider-Man: Who is Silk?

Silk — real name Cindy Moon — is a Korean-American superhero and a classmate of Spidey himself, Peter Parker. She’s a relatively recent Marvel hero as far as the comics go, being introduced by writer Dan Slott in The Amazing Spider-Man #1 in 2014. Her powers are pretty similar to Spider-Man’s; she also got them after being bitten by a radioactive spider.

The TV show won’t be the first time Silk has been involved in a live-action production. Many forget that she actually appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Played by Tiffany Espensen, Cindy Moon has shown up in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

SIlk will no doubt be a great addition to the SPUMC. There’s also talk of Madame Web and Spider-Woman projects coming to our screens.

As Silk edges closer to production, we’ll keep our eyes peeled for casting news. Who knows, they may even cast Tiffany Espensen and crossover with the MCU, but I wouldn’t count on it.
