LeVar Burton will return as Geordi La Forge on Star Trek: Picard…but not yet
By Dan Selcke
Star Trek: Picard picks up with the adventures of Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) decades after the end of Star Trek: The Next Generation, when he’s an octogenarian venturing back out into space after a period of boring retirement. The show has given longtime Trek fans a chance to catch up with old favorites, with guest appearances from the likes of William T. Riker (Jonathan Frakes) and Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) already in the bank.
There’s a second season of the show on the way, but like so many other TV and film productions, it’s been slowed down by the pandemic. Nevertheless, we know it will feature the return of more Star Trek veterans, including Whoopi Goldberg as Guinan.
But there’s a lot more to get to. What about Geordi La Forge, the Starfleet officer played by LeVar Burton? With Burton in the news over stuff like his new Jeopardy hosting gig, surely this would be a great time to get him onto Picard, right?
LeVar Burton won’t be in Star Trek: Picard season 2, but has hopes for season 3
Unfortunately, it doesn’t sound like it’s in the cards…yet. “I can say unequivocally that I am not doing season two of Picard,” he told Whoopi Goldberg herself during an appearance on The View.
“Here is the thing,” Burton continued. “I believe it is reasonable—in fact practical—to assume that Picard still knows these people. They’re his friends. I think we might see more of his friends. At least I hope we do before this is all over.”
So although Burton won’t reprise his role as Geordi in this next season of Picard, he expects to come back at some point. According to TrekMovie.com, the series is only meant to run for three seasons, so we’re marking it: we see Geordi La Forge in Star Trek: Picard season 3 or we riot complain about it on Twitter.
We don’t have an exact release date Star Trek: Picard season 2 yet, but expect it sometime in 2022.
