Batman spin-off series Pennyworth hasn’t been renewed for season 3 yet but there are some interesting conversations happening behind the scenes about the show’s future, and and its future home. According to Deadline, talks are underway between Epix, Pennyworth’s current home, and Warner Bros. TV, the studio behind the show. The goal is finding a path for the show’s first two seasons to be available on Epix and HBO Max while also figuring how to manage a potential third season.

Epix has two original scripted series to its name: Pennyworth, about the adventures of the man who will go on to become Bruce Wayne’s butler, and Godfather of Harlem. Pennyworth was already underway at Epix when HBO Max debuted, and Warner Bros. TV started in on a plan to bring its DC properties back to the mothership so that they can be housed in one spot.

Deadline’s Nellie Andreeva suspects that Epix would end up with a “second window” should the show get a season 3 order, but nothing has been confirmed. Season 2 was delayed by the pandemic and the third season’s fate is up in the air.

Pennyworth sits in limbo between Epix and HBO Max

From a programming standpoint it makes perfect sense to let the contract expire at Epix and then bring the show to HBO Max, but it’s seldom that easy. If nothing else, the show would likely be shared by both studios.

HBO Max is investing a lot of time and money into DC content. In addition to serving as the home for movies and series from the past, they’re paving the way for new originals like Green Lantern and Peacemaker, along with Titans and Harley Quinn, which made the jump from the now defunct DC Universe service.

Pennyworth, which follows the adventures of a young Alfred Pennyworth and Thomas Wayne in 1960s London, is the perfect show for their ever-expanding Batman universe. It’s no wonder that they want to secure the first two seasons for HBO Max so that it’s the official hub for all things DC Comics.
