Disney reveals “real” working Star Wars lightsaber, but there’s a catch

It’s May the Fourth, so naturally the Star Wars memes and references abound on what should be an official global holiday celebrating the beloved intergalactic franchise. Disney, which owns Star Wars, started the day with a bang by revealing the first look at its “real” lightsaber. Yes, it’s a working, retractable lightsaber and it looks absolutely amazing.

The lightsaber was revealed in a brief clip that shows a woman dressed as Rey standing in a nondescript room. Her hands are wrapped around the hilt of the lightsaber, from which suddenly rises a beam of light. Unlike other lightsaber props, this lightsaber is not a clear rod that glows. It literally retracts and expands like a real lightsaber, and it will be the it-item for Star Wars fans around the world.

If only it were easy as buying one online. Though it’s not stated implicitly, based on the promo, the lightsaber will only be available for guests who book the full experience at the new Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser hotel coming to Walt Disney World.

The Star Wars hotel will revolutionize the theme park experience

Despite the global pandemic throwing life into disarray, Walt Disney World has been moving at light speed to finish the Star Wars hotel that promises an immersive experience that will blow the minds of Star Wars fans young and old. The Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser takes fans aboard the Halcyon starcruiser for a two-night adventure, embarking in 2022.

It makes sense that the soon-to-be-in-demand lightsaber is only available for guests of the hotel, because Disney is known for producing exclusive items available to a limited number of fans who are able to obtain them. (Affordability is a whole other story.) Though the hotel’s opening date has not been announced, expect that bookings will be full for quite some time, leading to massive FOMO from fans itching to get a chance to live out their Star Wars fantasies.

The new lightsaber will no doubt be the first of many items offered exclusively for Galactic Starcruiser guests. The exclusivity will create a frenzy among fans who aren’t able to book a stay at the hotel, so expect lightsabers to pop up on eBay as soon as they become available.
