Star Trek: Picard may be filming seasons 2 and 3 back to back

Star Trek: Picard is reportedly filming seasons 2 and 3 back to back, as reported by ComicBook. And the source of this news is none other than Q himself, John de Lancie. Known for playing the trickster of the Star Trek universe (he could give Loki a run for his money), de Lancie has been talking with fans on social media and the information slipped out.

Not only are they filming two seasons, according to de Lancie, but he’s already getting under Sir Patrick Stewart’s skin, just as Q used to ruffle Jean-Luc Picard’s feathers. The information comes from TrekMovie, which spotted de Lancie talking about everything in a Cameo video.

“Q is coming back,” de Lancie said. “As a matter of fact, for the last two weeks I have been filming on Picard and really annoying Picard – really annoying him. [laughs] Patrick was delighted to see me for the first couple of days and after a couple of more days of really annoying scenes, he said, ‘So, how many episodes are you doing?’ In other words, ‘When are you going to get out of my face?’ And the answer is six episodes. I think they are going to be coming out – actually, I don’t know. But we are shooting season two and three all at the same time right now.”

Star Trek: Picard season 2 is due in 2022

Thanks to the pandemic, filming on season 2 has been delayed, which isn’t surprising because no one wants to put Sir Patrick Stewart in any kind of jeopardy by filming until it’s absolutely safe.

The season 2 teaser, which revealed Q’s return, has fans buzzing, so the idea that season 3 is in production and can follow soon after season 2 is reassuring.

De Lancie’s Q has been part of the Star Trek: The Next Generation mythos from the very beginning. He appeared in the pilot episode, setting the tone for a very different kind of Star Trek. While Q put the crew of the Enterprise at great risk time and time again, fans couldn’t get enough of the banter between the mischievous Q and the straight-laced Picard.

A year has passed since the debut of the series, so it will be nice knowing that two seasons are on the way. There is currently no word on the premiere date for Star Trek: Picard season 2.
