Sam Heughan asks Outlander fans to “treat historic sites with…respect”

Sam Heughan (Jamie Fraser) is humbly requesting that Outlander fans be respectful of historical shooting locations from the series, like the Midhope Castle (Castle Lallybroch on the series). The show is set primarily based in Scotland, and in a pre-COVID world, thousands of tourists would visit places such as the Culloden Battlefield, where stones marking the tombs of fallen fighters have been taken from the site. While there is nothing wrong with visiting these places, it irks Sam Heughan when folks try to take a “souvenir” from these locations as a way to take a piece of Outlander home with them.

Speaking with The Sunday Times about Clanlands: Whisky, Warfare, and a Scottish Adventure Like No Other, a book he co-wrote with Outlander costar Graham McTavish (Dougal MacKenzie), Heughan urged fans to be mindful before doing stuff like that. He hopes that fans “reading our book or other books” will “understand the history of what happened and treat historic sites with the respect they are due.”

Sam Heughan isn’t the only one asking Outlander fans to be respectful

Graham McTavish is behind Heughan on this, saying that he doesn’t “agree with people taking souvenirs” and that such “places are to be shared by everybody.” McTavish reminds fans visiting these sites that if they’re “dismantling them for your own selfish gain then that’s not helping anybody at all.”

McTavish and Heughan’s book chronicles their journey across the country of Scotland as they explore its culture, food, beauty, and of course, whiskey. It’s essentially the book version of their Starz travel series, Men in Kilts.

And just in case you were wondering if Sam Heughan was asked about potentially playing James Bond for the millionth time, he was, and he had a fun answer: “Any actor that’s been in a tuxedo is put on a list. Of course, everyone would jump at the chance.”

But the question is, would he jump at the chance? If he hasn’t already, I think he’s made it pretty clear he’s ready to go when they are.
