Stephenie Meyer published the first “new” book in her wildly popular Twilight series in 2020. Midnight Sun is the story of Twilight but from Edward Cullen’s perspective instead of Bella Swan’s. The result is a fresh new take on a familiar story, and lots of time spent in development makes it an arguably better read than the original book. Does that mean fans can expect a Midnight Sun movie?

The last time Edward and Bella appeared on screen together was in 2012’s Breaking Dawn Part 2. Almost 10 years have passed since Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson have portrayed the sparkly vampires, and their careers have gone in vastly different directions since.

With Stewart receiving critical acclaim for parts in independent films and Pattinson about to assume the mantle of the Bat in 2022’s The Batman, the likelihood of both actors returning to their roles is very slim, if not completely outside the realm of possibility. But that doesn’t mean Midnight Sun doesn’t deserve a shot at becoming a movie.

Why Twilight novel Midnight Sun should be made into a movie

One of the biggest critiques of the Twilight series is that the books weren’t exactly great works of literature. Stephenie Meyer’s writing improved with each book, but her original books pale in comparison to Midnight Sun.

Meyer worked for years on Midnight Sun, knowing that fans were eager to learn how Edward perceived events from the first book. Edward’s perspective, and perhaps the extra time Meyer spent writing the book, make Midnight Sun a much better read than the first book. Edward, after all, is over a hundred years old and has wisdom and perspective that a teenage girl simply cannot possess.

With Hollywood in a perpetual state of rebooting everything under the sun, it makes sense to reboot the Twilight franchise, with Midnight Sun setting the tone for a new series of movies. It would allow for a more mature set of movies that could fix problems seen in the original franchise and move the story ahead for a whole new generation of fans.
