Goodbye Dean Winchester, Hello Soldier Boy! Supernatural’s Jensen Ackles is all set to play an unheroic superhero in the upcoming third season of The Boys on Amazon Prime Video. Showrunner and writer Eric Kripke shared a picture of Ackles (and his marvelous new beard) standing in front of his trailer:
Kripke was also the showrunner on Supernatural for five seasons, so this is a reunion for Ackles. But The Boys is nothing like Supernatural, and Soldier Boy is nothing like Dean Winchester.
We heard Soldier Boy’s name mentioned a couple of times during the second season of The Boys. He’s one of the first superheroes the Vought Corporation created with its Compound V chemical. We even see a statue of him in the seventh episode of season 2, but Ackles will show us what he looks like in the flesh.
Soldier Boy fought for Vought International in World War 2. At some point he met Nazi superhero Stormfront (Aya Cash), who went by Lady Liberty at the time. His success in the war made him the first celebrity superhero.
If that sounds a little like Captain America, it’s meant to. As Homelander is a spin on Superman, Soldier Boy is a take on Captain America, and neither of these heroes quite lives up to their DC and Marvel counterparts.
When does The Boys season 3 premiere on Amazon Prime Video?
The Boys season 3 is gearing up to be a wild ride, quite possibly wilder than anything that has come before. For instance, it will include the “Herogasm” episode, which revolves around superheroes saying they’re coming together to fight off a supervillain but really they’re just engaging in some superpowered debauchery.
Will Soldier Boy be a part of that? We’ll have to wait until The Boys season 3 debuts on Amazon Prime Video to find out. With any luck, it’ll premiere by the end of the year.
