The Venture Bros., other series coming back with follow-up movies

Adult Swim is making follow-up movies to three of its cancelled animated series: The Venture Bros., Metalocalypse and Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

Last year, Adult Swim cancelled the wonderfully strange The Venture Bros. after seven seasons and nearly 20 years on the air, and I was crestfallen. This bizarre send-up of old Hanna-Barbara cartoons morphed along the way into an obsessively self-referential coming-of-age saga/superhero send-up/pop cultural celebration, and I don’t know when exactly I became hooked but I definitely did.

I was holding out hope that it would come back in some form sooner or later — everything is getting revived nowadays, after all — and happily I didn’t have to wait long. Adult Swim announced that it’s bringing back not only The Venture Bros. but two of its other off-kilter animated hits, Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Metalocalypse, for follow-up movies. There are already synopses:

The new movie is created by Brendon Small and Tommy Blancha. The Venture Bros. ended its seventh season on a number of cliffhangers, so it definitely needed some kind of resolution. Metalocalypse creator also wasn’t happy with how his show ended back in 2013, and mounted a failed social media campaign to bring it back, to no avail…at the time.

As for Aqua Teen Hunger Force, it was never that big on plot, so it should have no problem picking up exactly where it left off and being as weird as ever.

There’s no word on when any of these movies might be available, but they’ll come out on Each film will debut on home video and video-on-demand first, hang out there for 90 days, and then become available on HBO Max and Adult Swim.
