Lucifer returns for the back half of season 5 on May 28, but the cast and crew are already looking ahead to the show’s final season. D.B. Woodside, the actor who brings Amenadiel to life, makes his directorial debut in season 6. He recently opened up to TV Line about the slow march to the series finale.

“5B picks up literally two seconds from where we ended,” Woodside says of the new episodes. God, played to perfection by Dennis Haysbert, is newly arrived in LA to break up the tension between his sons Lucifer (Tom Ellis) and Michael (also Ellis). Chaos ensues.

Fans are particularly excited about the musical episode in 5B, titled “Bloody Celestial Karaoke Jam”, and though Woodside can’t say a lot about it, he did give everyone a little taste of what’s coming. “I think that all I’m allowed to say for the musical episode is that Rachael [Harris] and I have a duet. Amenadiel and Dr. Linda have a duet, which is going to surprise a lot of people. It brings me back to something that I used to do quite a bit in my youth.”

D.B. Woodside says Lucifer is very “special”

Like his co-star Kevin Alejandro, who has directed several episodes of the series, Woodside will step behind the camera for the first time in season 6 to direct a pivotal episode. He says that his episode features the entire cast, and “is unlike any episode that people have seen. It takes place over one long night, and it’s everyone kind of sitting around talking…”

He learned a lot about the craft from directing an episode. “As a director, I’m responsible for the entire vision, and sometimes actors can come to a scene with a very small point of view and not understand how they’re fitting into the big picture,” he said. He also says that filming during COVID-19 was something that made shooting challenging scenes even more difficult, but knowing the cast so well made it a lot easier.

Lucifer was cancelled at FOX and resurrected for one season at Netflix, but when executives realized the show’s major success on the streaming site they gave it a fifth and final season, which then turned into another season. This time, though, season 6 will be the end.

Woodside knows that Lucifer has been a very special experience for the cast and crew, who navigated this crazy journey together. He and fellow acting veteran Harris have been around the industry long enough to know that Lucifer is unlike most shows in production. “We’ve been saying this is a special show.” He can’t imagine what life will be like after the show ends but he knows it won’t be the same. “This was a wild, beautiful ride, and I’m going to miss it.”
