They don’t call it the Animal Kingdom for nothing. Discovery’s new show Otter Dynasty follows the trials and tribulations of various river otter families in Singapore, and Discovery (which is merging with WarnerMedia, FYI) promises that it’s “Game of Thrones with otters,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Laugh all you want about cute little otters, but they have a dark side: Male sea otters (which are a different species but part of the same family as the river otters seen in Otter Dynasty) will attempt to kill pups or use them as ransom so that the mother otters give them food. Also alarming: male sea otters will rape baby seals.

Yeah. Otters are no joke. They would fit right in with the Lannisters on Game of Thrones.

Game of Thrones and Otter Dynasty are essentially the same show

Instead of King’s Landing, the action in Otter Dynasty takes place in Singapore’s Marina Bay, where otter families live and raise their young. Every day means a new challenge as they face threats from people, other animals and natural disasters that can easily destroy everything they have worked to build.

Otter Dynasty is a rich family drama showcasing distinct, memorable characters through stories of resilience, determination and family rivalries,” said Discovery executive Amy Introcaso-Davis. “With real-life stories from the natural world, fueled by status, survival, power grabs and romance, it’s Game of Thrones with otters.”

Also there’s nudity, because otters don’t wear clothes. The similarities are piling up.

Jokes aside, Otter Dynasty will also share what life is like for animals trying to compete with humans who are constantly putting their lives in jeopardy, whether it’s pollution, competition for space or being pushed out of the way to make room for farmland or housing.

Every day is like Game of Thrones in the animal kingdom, and the new Discovery show is bringing the drama into our living rooms.
