Joss Whedon has pretty much been exiled from Hollywood at this point following a rash of scandals, but a couple of years ago, the Avengers director was in high demand. One of his projects was Batgirl, a DC movie about Jim Gordon’s superhero daughter.

Whedon shocked fans in 2018 when he left the picture, saying he couldn’t “crack the code” on the movie. The movie has been in limbo ever since, but The Hollywood Reporter now brings us the news that DC Films has hired a pair of new directors to take over: Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the duo behind last year’s successful Bad Boys for Life as well as the showrunners on the upcoming Ms. Marvel show on Disney+.

“With Batgirl, we hope to take the audience on a fun ride and see a different side of Gotham,” said producer Kristin Burr. “[Christina Hodson’s] script is crackling with spirit. Adil and Bilall have an excited and joyous energy, which is infectious, making them the perfect filmmakers for this Batproject. And I’m just psyched I get to be part of the DC universe, which is super cool.”

Batgirl is coming to HBO Max

Another interesting wrinkle is that the Batgirl movie is apparently going to debut on HBO Max. THR doesn’t explicitly say that there will be no theatrical release but that’s what it sounds like.

There’s no release date for the movie as of yet.
