Will there ever be another season of Game of Thrones?
When Game of Thrones bowed at the end of season 8, it left lots of fans with mixed feelings about how the show ended and what could have, or should have, happened. HBO is moving on from the series, launching a new connected universe that will begin with the prequel House of the Dragon.
Feelings about the final season of Game of Thrones aside, HBO is making big plans for their juggernaut franchise and there is no reason to revisit what happened in Game of Thrones. (It would also be next to impossible to gather all of the actors again now that they have been released from their contracts)
One argument that Game of Thrones should continue is that George R. R. Martin isn’t done with his masterful A Song of Ice and Fire. With stories left to tell, another season of Game of Thrones should be on the table.
There is a future for the Game of Thrones universe, not the show
Westeros has a bright future (and past) thanks to HBO’s plans to delve into the extended universe. There are several possible spinoffs in the works including Tales of Dunk & Egg, Sea Snake (also referred to as 9 Voyages), Flea Bottom and 10,000 Ships. There has also been talk of an animated series that could end up on HBO Max.
Needless to say, Martin has created a rich world full of stories that remain to be told and it’s largely for this reason that there’s no need to revisit the original Game of Thrones series.
It’s possible that some of the characters from GoT could appear in these spinoffs, which would be a welcome thing. A more exciting possibility is that many of them will involve new characters that haven’t been introduced to fans on screen, which means more characters to learn about.
Game of Thrones won’t be continuing beyond season 8, but there’s a bright future ahead and that’s a very good thing for fans who want to learn more about the history of Westeros and the people who live there.
