Enjoying Shadow and Bone? You’re not alone. The newest fantasy series to hit Netflix is a huge hit for the streamer, and thankfully there is plenty of source material to draw from so that the story can continue for many seasons to come. Shadow and Bone is the first book in a larger universe of stories from author Leigh Bardugo.

Bardugo wrote Shadow and Bone in 2012. The book arrived at the peak of the Twilight and Hunger Games craze, opening the door for YA fans young and old to embark on a new adventure. The book was a big hit and it spawned what came to be known as the Grishaverse.

Shadow and Bone is the first book of the Grisha Trilogy

Shadow and Bone is the first book in the Grisha Trilogy, which also includes Siege and Storm and Ruin and Rising. The stories in the Grisha Trilogy follow the adventures of Alina as she learns more about her powers and works to save her people and defeat the Darkling.

The Six of Crows Duology follows the Grisha Trilogy and comprises The Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom. There is also The Nikolai Duology, which includes the King of Scars and Rule of Wolves. Bardugo also wrote two novellas, The Language of Thorns and The Demon in the Woods, which are included in the larger Grishaverse.

If you’ve been watching the Shadow and Bone series on Netflix, be advised that the action in the series is actually based on Shadow and Bone and The Six of Crows. The stories were combined to introduce more characters and a B-plot to the main story, so the series is not a dedicated adaptation of the books. However, if you have read all of the books then you’ll appreciate how the Grisha Trilogy and The Six of Crows Duology pair together.

Thanks to Bardugo’s extensive Grishaverse there will be plenty of source material for Netflix to draw upon, and that means that Shadow and Bone won’t be going anywhere for a long time. Though the series has not been given the green light for season 2, showrunner Eric Heisserer is already making plans so that they can hit the ground running when the time comes.
