DC’s Legends of Tomorrow review, Episode 604: “Bay of Squids”
By Ariba Bhuvad
DC’s Legends of Tomorrow dares to go where no other show has gone before it. Prior to this show’s existence, we’d be hard-pressed to find a superhero series that would tackle the Cuban Missile Crisis and make it entertaining, but Legends is up to the task.
Rory (Dominic Purcell) has left behind his non-stop drinking to focus on finding Sara Lance (Caity Lotz). But given he and Sara are the O.G. Legends, I can see why he feels so sentimental and duty-bound to find out where she’s been taken.
It’s not often we get to see Rory lead a mission, but he takes the reins of this one, which has the Legends travel to Cuba in 1962. Apparently, they’ve captured an alien there that Rory believes can lead them right to Sara.
“Bay of Squids” is ridiculous and insane, and there’s no other way we’d want it.
The Legends of Tomorrow lands in Cuba
Upon arriving in Cuba, the Legends split up to cover more grounds…after accidentally stealing a nuke. Rory and Spooner (Lisseth Chavez) wind up with the responsibility of getting the warhead back to the Russians while Nate (Nick Zano) and Zari (Tala Ashe) jet off to Washington D.C. to prevent President John F. Kennedy (Aaron Craven) from making any rash decisions that will screw up history.
Meanwhile, Ava (Jes Macallan) takes a step back to let Rory lead the mission, despite her urge to stop him from screwing it up. Instead, she and Behrad (Shayan Sobhian) look for the alien they need to find Sara.
The episode is filled with hilarious antics that make it the best episode of season 6 so far. Let’s get into it.
The Legends of Tomorrow team up with JFK
As a huge history nerd, Nate loves nothing more than the idea of getting to be in the same room as JFK. His knowledge of history comes in handy more than ever before. Finally, we get to see him be an instrumental part of the team. For a long time now, Legends of Tomorrow hasn’t properly utilized Nate’s character. It was so refreshing to see him at the forefront doing his thing alongside Zari 2.0.
Nate tries to convince JFK to stay calm and avoid kicking off World War III. Of course, the other men in the room are all about wreaking havoc, so Nate has the cards stacked up against him. So what does he do? He uses a football analogy…for peace. It seems to do the trick but results in an absolutely hilarious “game” of football as he and JFK team up against the others to hang onto the briefcase that would ultimately kickstart the war with a push of a few buttons.
In the midst of all of this, Zari is pretending to be a secretary. Kudos to Ashe for putting on that accent as she tries to appeal to the men by “dumbing it down.” She does her part in preventing World War III when she sends a note with instructions opposing the command of DEFCON 2.
In the end it all works out, and it gives us a Nate and Zari team-up story of the kind we haven’t seen in a while.
Legends of Tomorrow makes Rory the hero everyone needs
The most spectacular aspect of this episode is seeing Rory lead the way. Instead of choosing to drink away his sorrows like he normally does, Rory tackles the mission head-on. He wants to find Sara, and he’s going to do it despite Ava’s reluctance.
Rory is undoubtedly the heart and soul of the episode, taking every matter into his own hands. When a missile is launched towards Washington D.C., he prevents World War III when he removes the nuke from it.
He also manages to befriend the alien that Ava helps set free. It’s very touching to see that alien listen to what he has to say and be convinced to help out in their search for Sara.
It’s a great storyline for Rory, and I’m excited for what happens next now that he’s taken the Waverider and is jet-setting around the universe with the alien looking for Sara. It doesn’t hurt that when the alien puts on a cloaking device she turns into a beautiful woman who loves to drink as much as he does.
Elsewhere in Legends of Tomorrow
Behrad winds up hanging out with Fidel Castro (Tim Perez). Of course, Castro mistakes him for Che Guevara, but Behrad quickly pretends he’s actually Che’s cousin, Jay. That game doesn’t last for too long, but it’s hilarious to see Behrad throw himself into it. I feel that we don’t see his character utilized as often as we should, but this week changes that! He’s quickly become an integral part of the team so here’s to more Behrad!
All in all, we got a solid episode of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow this week. It gave us a little bit of everyone while paving the way for more storylines and character arcs. The emphasis on secondary characters in season 6 is making it a more enjoyable watch, and I, for one, can’t wait to see how it shapes the rest of the episodes.
See you in two weeks!
