Aaron Taylor-Johnson, aka Quicksilver in the Avengers movies, will play Spider-Man baddie Kraven the Hunter for Sony. Beware of crossing streams.

While Disney toils away at its gigantically successful Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sony is off doing its down thing making a series of movies based on Spider-Man characters. We’ve already seen the first Venom movie, with a sequel coming out later this year. Morbius will that, and we’ve also heard of projects about Madame Web and Silk in development.

Now, TheWarp reports that the studio has cast Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Kraven the Hunter, a big-game hunter who makes it his person mission to kill Spider-Man to prove that he is the ultimate apex predator. That said, it’s hard to say if the upcoming Kraven the Hunter movie will actually involve Spider-Man as played by Tom Holland, since Disney and Sony have a weird joint custody agreement over that particular character. Basically, Spider-Man is a part of the MCU but none of these other Spider-Man-adjacent movies are, which makes things a little awkward.

Also awkward: Aaron Taylor-Johnson has been in the MCU already; he played Wanda Maximoff’s brother Pietro, aka Quicksilver, in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. As The A.V. Club points out, this pretty much guarantees that the Kraven the Hunter movie won’t be part of the MCU; otherwise Wanda would surely have questions about why a doppleganger of her brother is trying to mount Tom Holland’s head on his wall.

Or maybe it’s all part of Kevin Feige’s master plan, I dunno. We’ll learn more when Kraven the Hunter comes out in January of 2023.
