The fifth season of Lucifer came out this past Friday, and was one to remember. It was supposed to be the final season of the show, after all, so it makes sense for it to go big.

One of the biggest shocks was that (SPOILER incoming) longtime character Dan Espinoza  (Kevin Alejandro) died after getting shot by French mercenaries. What’s more, apparently he’s in hell rather than heaven. But now that Lucifer is literally god, the show can probably find a way to bring him back in some capacity, no?

That’s the impression we get from Alejandro, who talked to TV Line about the plot twist. [Showrunners Ildy Modrovich and Joe Henderson] immediately got on the phone with me, to say, ‘Hey, here’s the news. If you still want to be part of us, we know how to do it respectfully, and not change the quality of what we’re creating.'”

"So they found a gentle way to bring me back — not the way people are going to expect him to come back, and maybe not as a huge part of the show, but I got to be there for the end in some capacity. And that felt wonderful, to be able to finish out a full journey. Because dude, it’s been a journey, as you know."

How will Dan return in Lucifer season 6 after his death?

But how exactly does Dan come back? Alejandro isn’t saying. “It could be through flashbacks, it could be through trying to decide what’s going on,” he told ET Online. “I was on set a little bit in season six, so he’s coming back… just not the way everyone thinks he’s coming back.”

First things first: get Dan out of hell. Apparently it has to do with feelings of guilt he’s harboring, so he’ll have to deal with that. “The thing with guilt is that there really is no one who can help you. You have to help you,” Alejandro said. “I think a lot of what happens with Dan is really just lost introspectively within himself trying to figure out his own demons, so to speak, and why things happened to him the way they did because it happened so abruptly…That’s what you’ll find. You’ll find there is no help other than you helping yourself, basically.”

Even if Dan wasn’t coming back, Alejandro would have been on the set anyway. He’s directed a few episodes of the show over the years and helmed two in the final season, including the one before the series finale. “We have a two-part ending, and I had the pleasure of handling the big ‘climax’ of everyone’s evolution of their characters, which was heartbreaking, and beautiful,” he told TV Line. “[W[e knocked it out of the park, I cannot wait for people to see that episode.”

As he implies, the team has already finished shooting the sixth and final season of Lucifer, so hopefully we won’t have to wait too long to see it on Netflix.
