Finn’s story might not be finished, if the stars align. Actor John Boyega, who originated the role of Finn in 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, has been open and honest about his frustration with Finn’s story in subsequent movies, but in a 2020 interview he said that he’d be open to returning to the character under the right conditions.

Per Entertainment Weekly, Boyega made the statement on an episode of Jake’s Takes, outlining what it would take in order for him to feel comfortable enough to return.

John Boyega wants to work with “the [Star Wars] team”

“Whichever way, I am open to the conversation as long as it is Kathleen, J.J., and maybe someone else and the team, it’s a no-brainer,” Boyega said, referring to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and J.J. Abrams, who directed both The Force Awakens and The Rise of Skywalker.

Boyega’s comments underscore the tension that came about with Rian Johnson’s 2017 movie The Last Jedi. Although The Force Awakens seems to set up Finn as a major character in the new trilogy, he takes a back seat to Rey and Kylo Ren in the second and third movies, a source of continual frustration for the actor.

In September 2020, Boyega opened up about his frustration in an interview with GQ. “They gave all the nuance to Adam Driver, all the nuance to Daisy Ridley. Let’s be honest. Daisy knows this. Adam knows this. Everybody knows. I’m not exposing anything.”

His interest in possibly returning to the role with Kennedy and Abrams signals that he trusts their vision, and perhaps it would give his character the opportunity to have the story that Boyega was interested in telling from the beginning.

With more and more Star Wars stories coming to Disney+, perhaps Finn’s story could become a series in the same vein as The Mandalorian, with Finn as the show’s lead character. The series could follow his adventures as he grapples with everything that has happened to him after leaving life as a Stormtrooper behind.

Boyega’s quest to tell Finn’s story might play out better in a series format, where he can explore the richness of the character without having to fit it into a movie.
