Lucifer just debuted the second half of its fifth season on Netflix, to rave reviews. The show has a passionate fan base, but not all of them may be aware that this version of the character actually originated in Neil Gaiman’s landmark comic The Sandman, which tells the story of how Lucifer went from being the king of hell to operating a nightclub in Los Angeles.

Although they’re technically the same person, Lucifer from The Sandman is very different from the Lucifer we see in…um, Lucifer. Perhaps that’s why Netflix felt okay casting another actor to play the character in its upcoming adaptation of The SandmanGame of Thrones veteran Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth).

For their part, Lucifer showrunners Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich are fully in support of the casting change. “Like, one thing, she’s an amazing actress,” Henderson told Collider. “For another, she’ll bring a completely different tone to the character. And the character from Sandman is such a different character, I think casting someone who has just such a different energy… I think it’s just awesome. I’m dying to see the first picture of her in character. I could not be more happy.”

Lucifer showrunners want to see Tom Ellis and Gwendoline Christie together

I can’t wait to see Christie in costume, either; I’m sure she’ll bring all the charisma the role needs. And hey, on a show that plays as many games with reality as this one, who’s to say we couldn’t see both Christie and Tom Ellis playing Lucifer at the same time? “I mean, I would like to watch the adventures of Gwendoline Christie and Tom Ellis both playing different versions of Lucifer on a road trip together,” Henderson said.

Modrovich even made a pitch, saying simply, “Movie.” And I’m sold.
