Outlander season 6 teases returning cast member, release date

The cast of Outlander kicked off the week with a short video dedicated to their international fandom, celebrating World Outlander Day. Cast members old and new shared their appreciation for the fans who love this series. I’ve attended numerous Outlander panels at cons and I can personally vouch for the die-hard fans that have so much adoration for this series. It’s a beautiful fandom to be a part of, and the cast’s appreciation only makes it better.

Lord John Grey returns to Outlander?

It’s interesting that David Berry (Lord John Grey) is in the video. Last year, he took to Instagram to say his goodbyes, or rather that he hates goodbyes. When a fan asked if it was his last episode ever or just for the season, he responded, “Final ep on show. But life is long. Perhaps someday.”

Now it appears that “someday” may have come. True, his presence doesn’t confirm his return beyond a shadow of a doubt, but the entire video seems like it was shot while the cast was filming for season 6. It also includes the Christie family, who are brand new characters to the series.

John Grey is a big part of the books so his return wouldn’t be a shock, but we’ll have to wait until season 6 premieres to be sure.

Outlander season 6 release date

This brings us to a very exciting announcement: season 6 will premiere in early 2022! Yes, that’s right: we won’t have to wait an entire year before getting the next installment, and the fandom couldn’t be happier!

According to Deadline, the sixth season will have a total of eight episodes (yes, I know, it’s way too short). However, showrunner Matthew B. Roberts shared that season 7 will have “16 episodes next year as life returns to normalcy.”

Double the episodes? I’ll take it!

The season 6 premiere will clock in around 90 minutes, longer than usual. Technically that counts as two episodes, so I’d say we’re getting the equivalent of nine episodes.

Outlander season 6 will follow the sixth book in Diana Gabaldon’s series, A Breath of Snow and Ashes, which sees Claire (Balfe) and Jamie (Heughan) preparing for the looming American revolution. It’s certainly going to be a whirlwind of a season and we can’t wait to see how it turns out!
