WarnerMedia will be called Warner Bros. Discovery after merger
If you had WarnerMedia merging with Discovery on your 2021 bingo card, congratulations. The strangest merger in recent memory now has a name for the new company it created: Warner Bros. Discovery. It has a catchphrase, too: “The stuff that dreams are made of.”
So, yay. I think.
The Wall Street Journal reports that the official name for the merger dropped during a staff meeting on June 1. Though the initial deal was announced in May, executives clearly needed time to come up with the perfect name for this new venture, and they came up with Warner Bros. Discovery.
Warner Bros. Discovery will encompass Warner Bros., HBO, CNN and DC Comics as well as Discovery verticals like Food Network, news and sports ventures in Europe, and of course the Discovery channel. What I can’t wrap my brain around is that the studio that brought us Game of Thrones is now under the same roof as the one that produces 90 Day Fiance.

Nothing about this deal makes sense, and that’s what makes the new name so amusing. While there are several respectable properties within Discovery, including HGTV, Food Network and Animal Planet, thinking about Dr. Pimple Popper and Big Ed from 90 Day Fiance joining Batman and Dune just seems weird.
Discovery CEO David Zaslav will take the reins of the massive company, which adopted a line from The Maltese Falcon for its “The stuff that dreams are made of” slogan.
Kidding aside, Warner Bros. Discovery will be able to create an enormous amount of content. WarnerMedia had been growing HBO Max since its early 2020 debut, while Discovery+ launched in January 2021. Together, the streaming platforms will no doubt become a destination for viewers.
Let’s just hope there’s no “At Home with the Lannister”s or “90 Day Fiance: Gotham City” spinoffs in the works.
