The Flash’s Carlos Valdes (Cisco) promises “very goofy” series exit
By Ariba Bhuvad
Carlos Valdes has been the heart and soul of The Flash ever since the series first premiered back in 2014. His time as the goofy, superhero/villain-naming Cisco Ramon has made it a pleasure to watch. I’m not sure how the show will manage without him, but we’ll know soon enough: next week’s episode, “Good-Bye Vibrations”, which will mark Valdes’ final appearance as a reulgar on the show.
In an interview with TV Line, Valdes said he’s been contemplating Cisco’s big farewell for “a long time.” Believe it or not, Valdes started debating around Season 4 “what the end for this character might look like.” However, it wasn’t until Season 5 or 6 where he “started to become more comfortable with the idea of, ‘Oh, I think there’s a good way to put an end to this chapter.’”
Why does this chapter have to end, though?! We’re not ready to say goodbye to Cisco just yet.
As sad as this exit may be, Valdes promises that it won’t be as stressful or devastating as some of the character exits before him. In fact, it’s a “very silly, very goofy, low-stakes departure.” Getting to “just play, just be silly ended up being a very cathartic experience” for him, so it sounds like things ended on a wonderful note. With perhaps a cameo in the future? We can only hope.
Tom Cavanagh is also leaving The Flash, although there’s one thing that could tempt him back
Valdes isn’t the only Flash standby saying goodbye this season. Tom Cavanagh, who has played many versions of Harrison Wells as well as the Reverse-Flash, is also done after this season. He’s left the show more than once, but it’s for reals this time!
Well, at least until possibly the series finale, whenever that might be. Speaking with TV Line, Cavanagh revealed what it would take to bring him back just one more time: a Flash versus Reverse Flash battle.
"I’m not saying that this is going to happen, but [Arrowverse EP] Greg [Berlanti] and I always felt that when Grant [Gustin] decides to depart the show, it’d be hard to imagine a scenario other than ‘Batman comes home to Joker,’ and Flash and Reverse Flash settle things. It’d be hard to imagine a different storyline — and that’s all I’m going to say right now."
Um, yes, please!
Okay, so maybe we haven’t seen the last of him yet, at least based on that comment. But who knows when The Flash will end, considering it’s been getting renewed year after year? On the other hand, Arrow and Black Lightning have concluded and Supergirl is wrapping up this year, so the axe could be coming.
And as the old shows move out, new ones come in to take their place. We have the second season of Stargirl to look forward to, plus new series like Wonder Girl and Ava DuVernay’s Naomi. It may not be long until a new generation of DC heroes rules the CWverse.
Time will tell what happens on that front, but in the meantime, grab a tissue and get ready to say goodbye to Carlos Valdes during next week’s episode of The Flash. He will be missed!
