Ciri gets serious in first look at The Witcher season 2
By Dan Selcke
The Witcher is one of many shows delayed this past year thanks to the pandemic. That said, filming on season 2 of Netflix’s fantasy drama is officially wrapped and the hype train is pulling out of the station. To wit: this morning, Netflix released an ever-so-brief glimpse of what’s to come. Check out the first footage from season 2 below:
These brief clips are focused entirely on Princess Ciri (Freya Allen), who ended the first season by meeting Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill) after wandering through the wilderness after the fall of her home kingdom of Cintra.
The second second season will adapt Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher novel Blood of Elves; in that book, Geralt takes Ciri to the Witcher’s keep of Kaer Morhen to train her in the witching arts, and indeed, we can see her swing a blade in the above teaser, although it’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it kind of thing.
We’ll learn more about The Witcher season 2 at WitcherCon
All in all, it’s not a lot to go on. But we’re about to get more. Netflix also unveiled that it’s teaming up with CD Projekt Red, the people behind the very popular Witcher video games, for a “WitcherCon” to go down on July 9:
According to the press release, WitcherCon will feature:
- A variety of entertaining and interactive panels spotlighting the people who brought The Witcher to life in-game and on-screen.
- Breaking news, exclusive behind the scenes and never-before-seen reveals from across The Witcher franchise.
- Intimate looks into the creativity and production behind CD PROJEKT RED’s games, including the upcoming mobile game The Witcher: Monster Slayer, comic books and fan gear, AND Netflix’s live action series The Witcher plus merchandise, as well as the anime film Nightmare of the Wolf.
- Expert explorations into the lore, legends, monsters and origins of the Continent.
Available on both Twitch and YouTube, WitcherCon will start at 7:00 p.m. CST on July 9. We’ll surely see more footage then, and hopefully a release date; right now we know The Witcher season 2 is coming this year but don’t know when.
