Loki may be the God of Mischief, but he didn’t have to pull any tricks to draw in a whopping 890,000 U.S. households for the series premiere of his new Disney+ series. Given the success of both WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, it comes as no surprise that Loki would manage to bring in even more viewers.
There are many reasons for this, but we can start with Tom Hiddleston’s Loki being one of the most beloved villains/anti-heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A show all about his character was always going to be a hit.
Analytics company Samba TV reports that the premieres of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision captures about 759,000 and 655,000 U.S. households respectively. This means that Loki didn’t squeeze by the former record, but it nearly demolished it with 131,000 additional households.
The increasing number of viewers goes to show that Marvel’s strategy with its Disney+ series is working. It wasn’t a guarantee that the new battery of shows would be successful, but clearly they’re onto something, as usual.
There are a couple caveat with the numbers SambaTV is reporting. First off, they don’t include the number of mobile views. That’s likely leaving out a major chunk of views, and more people are viewing shows on mobile every day. Second, Samba TV only counts something as a view if the person watches for over five minutes, so these numbers are for those who stuck around awhile.
All hail Loki!
The love for Loki goes back to his first appearance in 2010’s Thor, where his cult following began. The version of the God of Mischief we follow in Loki isn’t the one we got to know in that and other movies, but rather than one who made off with the Tesseract in Avengers: Endgame. This means we’re dealing with the 2012 version of Loki who hasn’t come to love his brother Thor (Chris Hemsworth) or owned up to some of his past transgressions.
Now, this “variant” is working with the bureaucratic Time Variance Authority to help fix the timeline he and other versions of himself are messing up. Side note: Aren’t we just loving the bromance between Loki and Owen Wilson’s Agent Mobius? They are so fun to watch already!
The premiere was an absolute thrill to watch and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for Loki and Agent Mobius as they seek out yet another Loki variant who is wreaking havoc across time. Next Wednesday can’t come soon enough!
