A Quiet Place Part II becomes first pandemic-era movie to cross $100 million

The box office is slowly healing as theaters show signs of post-COVID recovery. Now that many states have eliminated or are in the process of easing pandemic restrictions and more people are being vaccinated, people are getting back to the theaters. A Quiet Place Part II, which was delayed several times over the past year, has crossed $100 million at the box office in a feat that hasn’t been seen since before the pandemic began.

A Quiet Place Part II was originally supposed to arrive in spring 2020, and then was moved to the fall and finally to spring 2021. As one of the biggest movies to hit theaters as they reopen, its success is very telling.

Though some states haven’t fully reopened, there’s no question that people are ready to go back to the movies, a very welcome sign for weary theater owners.

A Quiet Place Part II provides hope to weary theaters

SYFY Wire spoke with Comscore’s Paul Dergarabedian about what this news means. “It’s quite an amazing feat for A Quiet Place Part II to be generating huge pre-COVID style numbers, and this with less than 80% of theaters open, plus reduced capacity that doesn’t seem to be slowing down this horror juggernaut one bit,” he said.

Before A Quiet Place Part II had the top spot, it belonged to The Conjuring: the Devil Made Me Do It, which opened last weekend. The Conjuring sequel, which is also available to watch on HBO Max, slipped to fourth place in its second week.

Signs are that box office take will only improve as more people are vaccinated and more theaters open up. Look out for the Fourth of July weekend especially to be a big one.
