We’re in the midst of E3, the biggest video game trade show of the year, and the announcements are pouring out. Naturally, there’s some crossover between gaming and the world of sci-fi/fantasy/genre movies, starting with Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, a new game from Assassin’s Creed developer Ubisoft.
Although it lost out to Avengers: Endgame for a second, director James Cameron’s 2009 movie Avatar is still the most lucrative film of all time, so a video game makes sense. Plus, Cameron is mounting no less than four sequels, so it’s time to get the hype train rolling. Watch the trailer for the new game below:
It’s kinda hard to tell what you actually do in the game based on this trailer. Pretty, though.
So we’re getting an Avatar video game and a bunch of new Avatar movies. Do people want all of those things? You can decide for yourself, although there were some pretty good gags on Twitter from fans who wanted a different sort of Avatar game:
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is due out in 2022.
Off-brand Star-Lord, Gamora, Rocket and more star in Guardians of the Galaxy video game
Moving on, Final Fantasy developer Square Enix is following up its Marvel’s Avengers game with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, which is what it sounds like.
A word before you watch the trailer: although Square Enix has the rights to Marvel properties, it doesn’t have the rights to the likenesses of the actors who play Marvel heroes in the MCU. So although these Guardians are clearly based off the MCU versions — the quippy dialog is straight from the movies — their looks are changed ever-so-slightly so they don’t infringe on anything.
The A.V. Club said that this Star-Lord has “Jake Paul hair,” which is pretty accurate. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy comes out on October 26.
We’ll see what else E3 brings as the week goes on.
