Lucifer season 6 might be the farewell season, but showrunners Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich insist that it will stand on its own. In a new TV Line interview, they discuss what’s to come in the last suite of episodes.

If not for last-minute divine intervention, season 5 would have been the end to the show. When Netflix told the showrunners they wanted one more round, some changes needed to be made in order to transition from season 5 to season 6. “There is a new character in 6 that was not going to be part of season 5,” Henderson said. “A whole new character.”

The addition of a new character this late in the game is intriguing, and seems to be tied to how the show spins out of season 5.

Lucifer season 6 will feature a new story that “was not part of season 5”

“It’s very much our goodbye season,” Henderson said, “but as we started to dig into season 6, we found new stories we wouldn’t have told before.”

“In fact, the main story of season 6 was not a part of season 5 at all,” Modrovich teased.

Season 5 ended with Lucifer stepping into the role of God after bravely going to heaven and risking his own death to save Chloe. Now that he’s in charge, anything can happen.

Since plans to kill Dan off were cemented prior to the renewal, the team had to scramble to find a way to bring him back for the final season. “We knew we could not do another season without Detective Douche, so yeah, we found a story for him that we just love, and it’s one of those examples of sometimes you paint yourself into a corner and you find something that’s so much more fun and satisfying because of it,” Modrovich said. Perhaps the new character is someone who interacts with Dan in hell?

The final season of Lucifer has been filmed, but we don’t yet know when it will debut on Netflix. Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long.
