Star Wars set pics: Indira Varma’s role in Obi-Wan Kenobi show revealed

Ewan McGregor is returning as Obi-Wan Kenobi in an upcoming Star Wars prequel series all about his character! McGregor hasn’t played the good-hearted Jedi knight since 2005’s Revenge of the Sith, but with Disney eager to pump out lots of Star Wars content onto its Disney+ streaming service, it was a natural idea to bring him back.

Obi-Wan Kenobi will be set after Revenge of the Sith but before A New Hope, so we’ll most likely find Obi-Wan in hiding on Tatooine while a young Luke Skywalker grows up nearby, in the shadow of the Empire.

Joining McGregor in this new show will be Moses Ingram, Joel Edgerton, Kumail Nanjiani and others. Game of Thrones veteran Indira Varma (Ellaria Sand) is also part of it, although we don’t know who she — or any of them, save McGregor — will be playing. However, things got a little more clear in some new set pics, which show Varma wearing an Imperial uniform.

According to ComicBookMovie, there was speculation beforehand that Varma might be playing Obi-Wan’s love interest Satine Kryze, but clearly this isn’t the cast; it looks like she’ll be the side of the baddies, unless her character has a change of heart at some point.

The Obi-Wan Kenobi show is exciting for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is that it features the return not only of Ewan McGregor in the title role but also of Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader. Now that we know Varma is playing an Imperial officer, we’re looking forward to seeing her interact with Vader. Obi-Wan will have his work cut out for him.

Click to the end of this little slideshow and you can also see McGregor in costume, although he’s wearing a black robe that covers most of his outfit. Still, we basically know how Obi-Wan dresses: I’ll bet a million dollars he’s wearing a loose-fitting beige-and-brown tunic under there.

We don’t know exactly when the Obi-Wan Kenobi show will come out, but smart money is on sometime in 2022. Before that, we’ll be watching The Mandalorian spin-off The Book of Boba Fett later this year.
