Jeffrey Wright reveals that Westworld is bringing itself back online for season 4

The third season of Westworld aired early in 2020, near the start of the pandemic. HBO’s sci-fi series is known to go long stretches between seasons, and it’s no different this time, but at least there are signs that production is starting up on season 4. For one thing, Deadline reports that Prodigal Son star Aurora Perrineau has joined the cast in an unknown role, so casting is afoot. For another, star Jeffrey Wright (Bernard) posted a picture of his chair on set, labeled with the name of his character:

Westworld is back in business!

Let’s try and make sense of what happened in Westworld season 3

And what will happen to Bernard et al when the show brings itself back online? Given how twisty the series is, I don’t think anyone can say for sure. Even trying to summarize what happened to Bernard in season 3 is difficult.

In season 3, the robotic hosts had broken out of the titular theme park and were moving about in the human world, hatching plans and plotting schemes. Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) recruited the human Caleb (Aaron Paul) to her cause, but ended up dying in her quest to free humanity from the AI that controlled the course of their lives. Meanwhile, Bernard learned that Dolores had put the Sublime — a kind of digital afterlife to which many of the hosts departed in season 2 — inside his head. The last thing we see him do is access it, and then wake up sometime later, covered in dust.

“Bernard steps into The Sublime, and at some point, he steps out of it, it seems with a bit more information than he had previously,” Wright said about the mysterious ending a while back. “And perhaps with a bit more clarity than he’s previously enjoyed…Where he’s going, we don’t necessarily know, but he’s different than he was before he left.”

Oh, and also a host version of the Man in Black (Ed Harris) is working with an alternate version of Dolores in Charlotte Hale’s (Tessa Thompson) body to take over the world. This show is a lot.

Personally, I think Westworld has been a little too clever for its own good since season 1, but there’s always time to turn it around. Expect Westworld season 4 sometime in 2022.
