Game of Thrones fans have been eagerly awaiting new content after the flagship series ended in 2019. New set photos from the spin-off prequel House of the Dragon have sent the rumor mill into overdrive. Though it is currently in production, House of the Dragon will not premiere in 2021.

As of this writing, HBO has only confirmed that the show will debut in 2022. Filming began in April 2021, and given the visual effects needed for shows set in the GoT universe, the series will spend a decent amount of time in post-production before it’s ready to go.

When will House of the Dragon premiere?

Though House of the Dragon is roughly a year away, fans are busy speculating what will come from the new series, which follows the exploits of House Targaryen over 100 years before the events that took place in Game of Thrones.

As fans know, history is everything in George R. R. Martin’s complex world, and House of the Dragon helps fill in some of the key moments for the family that almost claimed the Iron Throne in the GoT finale.

The spin-off is being filmed in England and features an all-star cast that includes Matt Smith (Prince Daemon Targaryen), Emma D’Arcy (Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen), Rhys Ifans (Otto Hightower) and Olivia Cooke (Alicent Hightower). Other cast members include Steve Toussaint, Paddy Considine, Fabien Frankel and Sonoya Mizuno.

There are quite a few family histories that could form the basis for spin-off series for HBO, but it makes sense to start with House Targaryen given that Daenerys Targaryen almost claims the Iron Throne in the main series. The Targaryen family is also known for their connection to dragons, which means lots of eye candy for fans.

With so much pressure to deliver a new show that is able to follow in Game of Thrones’ footsteps, it makes sense that showrunners want to take time to make sure it lives up to the hype. That’s why House of the Dragon is not coming in 2021.
