Each new trailer for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad makes it that much harder to wait until the movie’s August 6 release date. For DC Comics fans, Gunn fans and fans of the superhero genre, it’s going to be unlike anything seen before, what with its massive cast of characters and Gunn’s carte blanche freedom to kill as many as he’d like. The latest trailer ups the ante with more story details and a lot more action.
This trailer highlights Idris Elba’s Bloodsport. One major revelation: Bloodsport is in prison because he shot Superman with a kryptonite bullet, landing the superhero in the ICU. He has no intention of joining Amanda Waller’s team until she threatens his daughter.
We also learn about something called “Project Starfish.” Whatever it is, it’s enough for Waller to assemble the Suicide Squad to stop it, which means she’s willing to do whatever it takes.
WATCH: The Suicide Squad teases “Project Starfish” in new trailer
One of the early trailers for The Suicide Squad featured a look at Starro the Destroyer wreaking havoc on a city; perhaps Project Starfish has something to do with that? Also, John Cena’s Peacemaker interrupts a briefing to ask whether Project Starfish has anything to do with buttholes. This is a classy movie, folks.
We also get a quick shot of a massive starfish arm with King Shark attached to it, but there’s no word on whether Starro is the main villain or a piece of a larger puzzle. What is clear is that The Suicide Squad promises nonstop action with lots of breakout moments for the various antiheroes involved, including Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn and Pete Davidson’s Blackguard, who thinks that Sean Gunn’s Weasel could be a werewolf.
Knowing Gunn’s penchant for multilayered storytelling, there’s every reason to believe that Starro is the tip of the iceberg. Look out for this highly anticipated villain team-up in theaters on August 6.
