The pandemic delayed a lot of TV, but things are getting back up and running. To wit, we have some new casting announcements today for the upcoming seasons of both The Boys on Amazon Prime Video and His Dark Materials on HBO.
The Boys, Amazon’s gleefully vulgar superhero satire, really put itself on the map with its second season, which benefitted from sharp writing, charismatic performances and excellent timing. Now, Entertainment Weekly reports that a trio of new actors will appear in the third season as a trio of new Supes, all of them created exclusively for the show:
- Miles Gaston Villanueva (Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders) is Supersonic, who may be an ex-boyfriend of Starlight’s (Erin Moriarty)
- Sean Patrick Flannery (The Boondock Saints) is Gunpowder
- Nick Wechsler (Revenge) is Blue Hawk
We don’t know exactly what powers any of these heroes have, but their names provide some food for thought. Supernatural alum Jensen Ackles will also join the cast as Soldier Boy, the very first superhero created by evil corporation Vought International way back when.
Game of Thrones alum Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje joins His Dark Materials
Next up, Variety reports on a bunch of new actors joining His Dark Materials for its third and final season, an adaption of Philip Pullman’s book The Amber Spyglass. The newcomers include Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Jamie Ward, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Simon Harrison, Chipo Chung and Amber Fitzgerald-Woolfe.
Of those names, Akinnuoye-Agbaje’s stands out to me because I remember him as the intimidating Adebisi in HBO’s Oz. More recently, Game of Thrones fans may remember him as Malko, the slaver who intended to sell Tyrion Lannister — well, part of Tyrion Lannister — to a “cock merchant.” Clearly, HBO has his number.
We don’t know when either of these shows will premiere new episodes, but given that The Boys is still filming and His Dark Materials just started, I’d bet on sometime in 2022.
