The Nevers had quite the debut season on HBO. To start, the fantasy drama about a group of Victorian women gifted with extraordinary superpowers had its production interrupted by the coronavirus pandemic, resulting in HBO releasing only half the planned episodes. And on top of that, creator and showrunner Joss Whedon very publicly left the show amid multiple scandals. There was a point where I wondered if HBO would bother continuing The Nevers, especially considering how expensive and ambitious it was to mount.
I shouldn’t have doubted. Not long after Whedon left, HBO tapped British screenwriter Philippa Goslett to replace him as showrunner, and now TheWrap reports that she and her team having started production on the next six episodes, to air sometime in 2022.
The Nevers is officially continuing without Joss Whedon
This is good news! The first six episodes of The Nevers had their issues — the show always seemed to be rushing ahead of itself (and leaving the audience behind) — but they had a whole lot to recommend them, including a talented cast, beautiful production design, and abundant creativity. I’m curious to see how Goslett and company will handle the show now that Whedon — who has a very distinct way of writing — is gone. Will they try to keep things consistent or go their own way? In either case, I’ll be watching.
