Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is an experience any hardcore Harry Potter fan should have. I myself traveled to London a few years back to see this two-part play, and I did it just in time, because after the COVID-19 pandemic set in last year, theaters have been largely shut down. But as the world claws itself back towards normalcy, so does Broadway.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is among the many shows returning to the Great White Way, but this time around, things will be a little different. Those who have tried to attend the show in the past know that it’s in two parts: based on availability, you can try to watch both parts on the same day or spread them out. That was a bit frustrating for those that had to plan trips around the play, especially when availability was limited, which was often.

However, in a post-COVID-19 world, the play is being condensed down to one part, at least in the United States. The production team behind Cursed Child, Sonia Freidman Productions, called it a “re-imagined” version made necessary by “the challenges of remounting and running a two-part show in the U.S. on the scale of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and the commercial challenges faced by the theater and tourism industries emerging from the global shutdowns.”

This new version of the play will “allow audiences to enjoy the completed Cursed Child adventure in one sitting eight times a week.” Any other Potterheads jumping for joy right about now?

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child returns to North America

The new condensed experience will have its world premiere at Broadway’s Lyric Theatre on November 16 in New York City. After that, a production will also kick off in San Francisco’s Curran Theater on January 11, as well as in Toronto’s Mirvish Theatre in May.

The two-part version of the play will continue in London, U.K. and Hamburg, Germany. I haven’t found any info on whether the North American version will have things cut out of it or if it will just be one very long show.

As laborious as a very long play can be, I can personally attest that this show is so worth the long run time. It’s an amazing experience for any Harry Potter fan. The story takes place about 19 years after the events of the final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. It follows Harry, Ron and Hermione as adults but focuses primarily on their children. Thinking about it puts a smile on my face, so if you haven’t seen it, I definitely recommend it!

Tickets for the Broadway production will go on sale to the general public on Monday, July 12. Tickets for the San Francisco show will be available on Wednesday, July 21. If you need more information or want to sign up for pre-sale access, head to HarryPotterOnStage.com to learn more! Ticket sale dates for the Canadian premiere have yet to be announced.

Yay for the return of Broadway!
