The Old Guard on Netflix is about a group of immortal (or near immortal) warriors who band together to right wrongs across the planet. Featuring a riveting action performance from Charlize Theron, the movie was incredibly successful — like, 78-million-households-tuned-in-during-the-first-month successful — so it’s no surprise that Netflix is making a sequel.

And now, Theron has given Variety an update: the script is done and production will start in the first quarter of 2022. Hooray!

What is The Old Guard 2 about?

As for what will happen in the new movie, we’re not sure, although the first film pointed in a pretty clear direction. At the very end (SPOILERS incoming), a depressed Matthias Schoenaerts (Matthias Schoenaerts) stumbled home drunk after being exiled from the group for 100 years as punishment for betraying them. He finds none other than Quynh (Van Veronica Ngo), an immortal who was once very close to Theron’s character who she had thought lost forever. Without getting too deep into it, Quynh has reason to be ticked at Andy. Are we headed towards an immortals-vs-immortals throwdown?

Theron also confirmed that Nicky (Luca Marinelli) and Joe (Marwan Kenzari), a couple of immortals who eventually became a couple after killing each other one too many times during the Crusades, will also be returning. There’s no release date yet but fingers crossed the movie will be out sometime next year.
