Marvel is killing Doctor Strange…in the comics

The first Doctor Strange movie starring Benedict Cumberbatch came out in 2016, introducing movie fans to an iconic Marvel character who had been a big part of the comics since the 1960s. And now he’s dying.

In the comics, just to be clear, although I suppose it’s possible Kevin Feige and company could kill him in the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. But he’s definitely going to die in the aptly named Death of Doctor Strange comic miniseries written by Jed MacKay with art by Lee Garbett.

“‘What happens to the world if Doctor Strange isn’t in it?’ It’s a question that I’m excited to show people the answer to in Death of Doctor Strange,” MacKay said in a press release. “Strange has been a Marvel fixture from the early days, but now, his time has run out and as a Strange fan, it’s been my bittersweet privilege to shepherd him through his last day and the effects that snowball out of it. We’ve cooked up a whale of a story to send Strange off with, and I can’t wait for people to join us on it!”

Garbett, meanwhile, said that the story they came up with is “the perfect finale” for the character. “Doctor Strange has long been top of my ‘most coveted character’ list. To finally get chance to draw him in such a momentous series is… well, magic,” Garbett said. “I couldn’t be more excited for the project and for everyone to see what we’ve got in store for Stephen and those closest to him. Jed’s conjured the perfect finale for Doctor Strange – and it’s a real third eye-opener! See you in September!”

Will Doctor Strange die in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness?

Now, when we say that Doctor Strange is going to “die,” it’s with the understanding that death doesn’t mean a whole lot in comics. Even on the big screen, we’ve watched half of the Marvel heroes die courtesy of Thanos and his megalomania, only for them to come back one movie later. Loki died in Avengers: Infinity War, but now he’s back in his own (very good) new show on Disney+.

So he’ll probably be back at some point. But to see him die, feel free to pick up Death of Doctor Strange #1 when it goes on sale in September. Who knows? Maybe it’ll give us a preview of what will happen in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is due out on March 25, 2022.
