Star Trek is set in a vast universe full of potential and possibilities. Thanks to its futuristic technology, alternate universes and the influence of mind-altering aliens, anything is possible. Therefore, news of a potential Star Trek musical shouldn’t be surprising.

If franchise producer Alex Kurtzman has his way, it’ll happen. “Nothing would make me happier,” he said on the official Star Trek podcast The Pod Directive. “I’ve thought about this, and if we ever did a Short Trek, that would be the perfect format for it,” he said. “The thing is, if you’re going to do a musical, it would have to be as brilliant as ‘Once More, With Feeling’ from Buffy the Vampire Slayer… It has to have a concept that makes a musical necessary, or you have to come up with a really, really good reason for people to start breaking out into song, and we have yet to really explore that. But nothing would make me happier. I would die to see that.”

Short Treks are short-form standalone Trek adventures. They would indeed be a good fit for a musical interlude, but that’s not the only option.

Star Trek lends itself to musical episodes

Star Trek’s original series featured many instances where an alternate universe allowed evil versions of the crew to run amok. Star Trek: The Next Generation’s holodeck allowed the cast to live out Sherlock Holmes adventures. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine traveled back in time to live out an episode of the Original Series. Voyager took place in a wormhole where the rules are rewritten.

Kurtzman is absolutely correct that a logical reason would be needed for the characters to suddenly break out into song, but finding a reason wouldn’t be difficult. Just imagine a group of aliens who communicate through songs and lyrics.

Star Trek actors are incredibly talented, with several already having musical experience. The franchise has always embraced its actors’ talents (Jean-Luc Picard reciting Shakespeare, anyone?) and there would likely be a long line of cast members eager to sing.

Though Short Treks might be an easy home for a Star Trek musical, musicals could pop up anywhere in the universe — on Star Trek: DiscoveryStar Trek: PicardStar Trek: Strange New Worlds, etc — and they would make a welcome addition to the franchise.
