Marvel cut a scene where Loki got beaten up by Frog Thor
By Dan Selcke
Loki, Marvel’s newest Disney+ series, lends itself to Easter eggs. It’s all about the multiverse, which means that the writers can cram in any obscure comics reference they want knowing they’ll probably never have to account for how it affects the wider MCU. So yeah, make Loki an alligator. Sure, show us Thanos’ private helicopter. We’ll glimpse these things, enjoy them, and then move on.
Loki writer and producer Eric Martin tweeted through the latest episode, “Journey Into Mystery,” and clued us in about more Easter Eggs. There’s a bunch worth mentioning, but we have to start with this: did you notice a frog in a jar?
It ends up this was Throg, the Frog of Thunder, a variant of Thor from the comics. And we almost got more of him. “We actually shot a scene for the Time Theater in Ep 1 of Loki getting pummeled by Frog Thor, but had to cut it to keep things moving. It’s too bad, because Tom was funny as hell.”
This show could have one hell of a blooper reel.
The alternate version of Loki confronting Alioth is funnier than what we got
Some other fun notes about the episode:
- Although most of “Journey Into Mystery” is set outside, the whole thing was filmed on a massive sound stage.
- The crew loved alligator Loki as much as we did and put his likeness on a bunch of stuff. And the cast looks hilarious acting alongside the plushy alligator stand-in.
- Tom Hiddleston was hands-on with President Loki. “He spent the night before coming up with all sorts of hilarious alt lines, but we settled on ‘beef-witted, half-faced scrubs.'”
- There’s an alternate version of the scene where Loki and Sylvie confront Alioth where all the other Lokis join in because they can’t stand to let the main Loki outshine them.
Loki airs its season (series?) finale this upcoming Wednesday, July 14!
