The Mandalorian, WandaVision dominate the 2021 Emmy nominations

The nominations for the 2021 Emmy Awards have been revealed! These noms cover June 1, 2020, until May 31, 2021, and as always there are a few surprises.

First, let’s hit you with some stats: The Mandalorian and The Crown are tied for the most nominates with 24 apiece. Then there’s WandaVision with 23, The Handmaids Tale with 21, Ted Lasso and Saturday Night Live with 20, The Queen’s Gambit and Lovecraft Country with 18, Mare of Easttown with 16 and Hacks with 15. HBO got the most nominations with 130, with Netflix hot on its heels with 129.

And with that, let’s look at the details:

Emmys 2021 complete list

Best Drama Series

  • The Boys (Amazon Prime Video)
  • Bridgerton (Netflix)
  • The Crown (Netflix)
  • The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu)
  • Lovecraft Country (HBO)
  • The Mandalorian (Disney+)
  • Pose (FX)
  • This Is Us (NBC)

Last year, Succession won the top award of the night, but it’s third season isn’t coming until later this year so it’s not eligible. What will take its place?

For years, Game of Thrones dominated this category except when it took a year off between season 6 and 7, when The Handmaid’s Tale took home the top prize. Will we see a repeat, or will a new series step in? The Crown is always a favorite, Lovecraft Country got a lot of press, and I’m delighted and surprised to see The Boys among these nominees. I doubt it’ll win, but I think I’m rooting for it.
