Karen Gillan cried “full tears” reading Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 script
By Ashley Hurst
Since joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Nebula in 2014, Karen Gillan has been involved in some of the most tear-jerking movies in the entire franchise; I think we all teared up watching Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. Gillan will make her next MCU appearance in Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder (2022), and then in James Gunn’s much-anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in 2023! Of course, it’s too early for many details about the movie, but if Gillan’s early impressions are anything to go by, it’ll be something special.
Speaking to Collider, Karen Gillan shared her initial reactions to the script, which sounds much like it has a perfect mixture of laughs and tears. “I read that script with Pom Klementieff, who plays Mantis,” she said. “We read it together and we both cried and laughed, but there was full tears.”
"It’s incredible, I think it’s James’ strongest work yet with the Guardians and it’s just brilliant. It’s brilliant and it’s emotional and it’s funny and it’s all of those things that you want."
The cast receiving the scripts is a good sign that things are moving forward smoothly. Back in May, James Gunn confirmed that Vol. 3 was in pre-production, with filming eyed to commence at the end of the year. And for those of you wondering, yes, the soundtrack is also completed!
Karen Gillan praises James Gunn for being so “invested” in Nebula’s story.
Having worked in the Marvel universe and now the DCEU with The Suicide Squad, there’s no doubting James Gunn’s masterful ability to make every character in his ensemble casts shine. In another interview with Collider, Gillan shared her delight to begin working with him again for the first time since 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. While she’s played Nebula in the Avengers movies, she specifically commends Gunn due to his involvement and enthusiasm for her character.
"I think a lot of the reason that Nebula is the way she is is because of James Gunn. He’s the sort of creator of her and I think he really connected with the character personally. I remember when we would do scenes between me and Gamora, he’d be like crying in the rehearsals and stuff. He’s so invested."
Before we see any more of Gunn’s work within the MCU, we’ll get to see his first DCEU movie, The Suicide Squad, on July 30!
As for Karen Gillan, she’s appearing in Gunpowder Milkshake, which is out on July 14 on Netflix. There’s still a long wait before the Guardians are back in action, with the third installment set for May 23, 2023.
