Avatar: The Last Airbender began airing on Nickelodeon way back in 2005 and wrapped up in 2008. Spinoff The Legend of Korra then ran from 2012 to 2014, but apart from those years, things were pretty quiet.

Then everything changed when the series became available on Netflix. Suddenly there was a huge resurgence in this world, and we got multiple new show in development. Netflix is doing a full live-action remake of the original show, while Nickelodeon created Avatar Studios, which will be making multiple animated series and movies in The Last Airbender universe.

So we’ve gone from a quiet front to an Avatar arms race, and there have already been some big twists. Originally, series creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko were going to head up Netflix’s remake, but they walked away over creative differences and are now in charge of Avatar Studios. Who’s Avatar project will impress the fans more?

Netflix’s live-action Last Airbender remake is already controversial

Well, according to industry blog Hollywood North, Netflix has solid plans to move ahead with its series, and this after a long period of hearing little about it. According to the site, The Last Airbender remake will shoot from November 16 of this year through May 17 of 2022 under the direction of showrunner Albert Kim. The working title is Trade Winds.

If that’s the case, we can expect to hear a lot more about the show in the coming months, including what young actors have been cast to play Aang, Katara, Zuko and the rest of the cast.

There have been questions about how old those actors might be, with rumor having it that Netflix was aging up the characters for the live-action show. There have been a lot of rumors like that, none of which have greatly pleased the fans, although last we heard apparently Netflix was walking some of them back.

Hopefully, before long we’ll have some concrete pieces of content to compare, and we can see who comes out on top in this Avatar-off.
