The second trailer for director Denis Villeneuve’s Dune movie just dropped, and if the wait until the movie’s October 22 premiere seems like an eternity, you can fill the void by reading the original book by author Frank Herbert.

In Dune, a young boy named Paul Atreides (played by Timothée Chalamet in the movie) is thrust into the middle of a battle over the planet of Arrakis, which just so happens to produce the universe’s most valuable commodity: a drug known as mélange, or “spice.” This sprawling sci-fi epic is filled with betrayal, loss, environmentalism, and politics—and while Paul doesn’t initially know it, his role in the conflict is about to take on mythic proportions.

Herbert first published Dune in 1965, and it went on to win the inaugural Nebula award for Best Novel. It’s influenced countless science fiction and fantasy properties in the decades since, including the Star Wars franchise. Herbert continued the story of Paul and his family over the course of five more books.
