Nearly a decade after leaving Doctor Who, Freema Agyeman is all set to reprise her role as fan-favorite companion Martha Jones. She’ll be lending her voice to three Doctor Who audio adventures from Big Finish Productions.

Agyeman’s Martha Jones joined the Doctor Who world back in 2007, during David Tennant’s tenure as the Tenth Doctor. I don’t care what anyone says: Tennant’s era as the Doctor is hands down the best, along with Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor. These two brought so much life to the franchise and it’s always a blast going back to rewatch their episodes, but I digress.

Agyeman’s audio adventures are set between two episodes from 2007, “The Sound of Drums” and “The Last of the Time Lords.” Martha Jones spent this time on Earth; we’ll catch up with her in three stories: “The Last Diner” (by James Goss), “Silver Medal” (by Tim Foley) and “Deceived” (by Matt Fitton).

Martha’s journey on Doctor Who was interesting, especially because she eventually fell in love with the Doctor. (But who hasn’t, right?) She parted ways with him when he confessed he could not reciprocate her feelings. It wasn’t all bad for Martha though, because she went on to have adventures with UNIT and Torchwood.

Martha Jones returns to Doctor Who

“I love Martha Jones and I love tales of an apocalyptic Earth, so when we secured Freema for this box set I was immediately drawn to the idea of Martha’s year on an Earth subjugated by the Master,” said producer David Richardson. “The Doctor has lost! The Jones family in peril! Toclafane sweeping the skies, and a mission to travel the world, sharing tales of a Time Lord who defeats the monsters. There was so much dramatic potential in this story world and our writers have had a lot of fun with that.”

Agyeman added her thoughts on returning to play Martha Jones: “We really didn’t know what Martha was going through during that year on Earth – we see her embark on it, and we see the conclusion of it, but it’s so interesting to really see her as an ordinary person, trying to do extraordinary things. She has incredible independence and strength so I think she can rely on that, but it’s been great to see how she does ebb and flow throughout that journey.”

Martha embarked on these adventures just as the Toclafane, killer cyborgs, invaded the Earth. The Toclafane were ordered to remove one-tenth of the Earth’s population (Thanos vibes anyone?), but their plans were ruined when the Doctor and Captain Jack Harkness managed to reverse time. But that’s a story for another article.

I’m super excited to check these adventures out, especially because Martha was one of my favorite companions from Doctor Who. Not to mention Bridgerton’s Adjoa Andoh will also return for the audio adventures to reprise her role as Martha’s mom, Francine Jones. It’s going to be amazing all around!

The Martha Jones Big Finish audio adventure, The Year of Martha Jones, will release in December 2021. Fans can pre-order their copy through the Big Finish website, picking from a collector’s edition CD box set ($27.48) or a digital download ($16.99).
