Lucasfilm hires YouTuber who made viral Mandalorian edit
These days, you never know who might be watching your fan-made content on the internet. For a lucky few, it might end up helping you to land a dream job. That’s what happened for YouTuber Shamook, who became known as the person who “improved” the visual effects that brought a younger Luke Skywalker to life in The Mandalorian season 2 finale.
“As some of you may already know, I joined ILM/Lucasfilm a few months ago and haven’t had the time to work on any new YouTube content,” Shamook wrote on a recent video. Now I’ve settled into my job, uploads should start increasing again. They’ll still be slow, but hopefully not months apart. Enjoy!” ILM confirmed the news with a statement: “[Industrial Light and Magic is] always on the lookout for talented artists and have in fact hired the artist that goes by the online persona ‘Shamook.’”
When a fan can make The Mandalorian look better, hire them!
Shamook was able to do what ILM couldn’t do in The Mandalorian season 2 finale, cleaning up the younger version of Luke so effectively that the video has over two million views. It’s no wonder that Lucasfilm took notice.
The Lucasfilm statement continued: “Over the past several years ILM has been investing in both machine learning and A.I. as a means to produce compelling visual effects work and it’s been terrific to see momentum building in this space as the technology advances.”
This is great news for content creators who have been able to develop their own techniques, proving that creativity is still the best resource in this field. As studios seek to bring veteran cast members, living or dead, to the screen, the need to have the best technology available is important, but so too is the need to have talented individuals to use it.
The moral of the story is that if you’re creating content on the internet, it’s important to put your best foot forward because you never know who’s watching.
