Will Stephenie Meyer write a sequel to Midnight Sun?
In many ways, Midnight Sun is the best book in the Twilight Saga. A retelling of the original Twilight book from Edward Cullen’s perspective, it offers a lot of course corrections from that first novel, and reflects all the experience Stephenie Meyer picked up in the years since it came out. Unlike his paramour Bella Swan, Edward only looks like a teenager when he’s actually over a century in age. As such, his point of view is more mature than Bella’s, particularly at that point in her life.
So will there be a sequel to Midnight Sun?
Stephenie Meyer isn’t done with the Twilight universe just yet and has plans for other books, but she’s not planning on rewriting all of the books in the Twilight Saga from Edward’s perspective.
There won’t be a sequel to Midnight Sun
Midnight Sun sold over a million copies in its first week, prompting many fans to wonder if sequels would be forthcoming. Meyer told USA Today that she’s more inclined to explore other characters in the universe and leave Edward and Bella behind…for now. “There are two more books I think in the world that I want to write,” she said. “I have got them outlined and a chapter written, I think, of the first one, so I know it’s there. I am not ready to do that right now, I want to do something brand new.”
You might be wondering why an author would write the same book twice, rehashing the same dialogue but spinning everything from a different character’s perspective. It’s actually more common than you think.
Bestselling author E.L. James, of Fifty Shades of Grey fame, re-wrote her trilogy from Christian Grey’s perspective, and the series is actually much better for it. Years have passed since the original books were released, giving James the ability to reflect, listen to fans and approach her characters and stories with a different point of view.
The same is true of Midnight Sun. (Incidentally, it should be noted that Fifty Shades of Grey was developed as Twilight-inspired fan fiction) Meyer described using the original dialogue as “prison bars,” saying that it was refreshing to be able to write new scenes where she could express herself freely.
Knowing that Meyer is still invested in the Twilight universe is reassuring. Though there’s no plan for Edward’s story to continue in reimagined versions of the other books in the saga, you never know if Meyer might change her mind.
