The Walking Dead premiered on Halloween night in 2010, and for over a decade AMC’s drama about surviving in the apocalypse has captivated our collective imaginations. It’s hard to believe that The Walking Dead season 11 marks the end of the road for the beloved franchise and it has people wondering what happens when the series bows.

Season 11 kicks off on August 22, 2021, and the final season will be split into three segments of eight episodes.

But just because the flagship series ends in 2022, there is still a bright future ahead for the TWD Universe.

The Walking Dead after season 11

The Walking Dead has spawned two spinoffs, Fear the Walking Dead and World Beyond. Fear TWD is heading into season 7 this fall, and World Beyond will kick off its second and final season.

World Beyond was designed as a limited series meant to bridge the gap between the greater TWD Universe and the planned Rick Grimes movies, introducing fans to the world of the Civic Republic Military that whisked Rick away in a helicopter in TWD season 9.

As Fear TWD continues and the Rick Grimes movies are in development, AMC has announced a Carol and Daryl spinoff and Tales of the Walking Dead slated for release in 2023. There will also be a comedy set in the TWD Universe and a AMC+ original series that will dive into the mysterious submarine from Fear TWD season 6.

The Walking Dead will not continue in its present form, but there is room for the characters to live on in some form or another in the spinoffs. With AMC+ available to house exclusive content, like short “webisodes” or one-time event shows, there is a lot of room to keep TWD stories continuing even though the series is ending.

AMC has invested a great deal of time and money in the TWD Universe and while it’s sad to see the original series go, there is still a lot of room to explore new stories with new and existing characters. In that sense, this isn’t an ending but a new beginning.
