Marvel has its Marvel Cinematic Universe, DC Films as its DC Extended Universe, and Sony has (or hopes to have, anyway) the Spider-Verse, a network of movies based on Spider-Man characters…except that it shares Tom Holland’s version of Spider-Man himself with Marvel; it’s complicated.
Can it succeed? Well, the first big Spider-Verse movie, 2018’s Venom, was a pretty big hit, so naturally Venom and Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) are back for round 2 in Venom: Let There Be Carnage, with Woody Harrelson playing Venom’s most famous enemy. Watch the trailer below:
You know, for someone playing a serial killer who gets infected with an alien parasite that grants him superhuman abilities, Harrelson seems to be playing this part fairly quiet. I expected more hamminess. I guess I can see his performance for myself when the movie comes out on September 24, 2021.
Will Tom Holland be in Venom 2: Let There Be Carnage?
In other Spider-Verse news, Sony is also working on Morbius. Jared Leto plays the title character, a vampiric life-form who often fights Spider-Man in the comics.
But will Spider-Man himself actually show up in any of these movies? It feels like the train has pulled out of the station on Venom 2, but surely Sony wants Tom Holland fighting some of these characters. The next Spider-Man film, No Way Home, will reportedly engage in a lot of Spider-lore, so there’s still hope.
