The Mandalorian star Pedro Pascal would “love to be more off the helmet”

Pedro Pascal is absolutely blowing up right now. Years after his turn as Oberyn Martell on Game of Thrones, he’s coming off a crowd-pleasing role as villain Maxwell Lord in Wonder Woman 1984, starring in HBO’s ambitious The Last of Us series, and getting ready to film the third season of The Mandalorian, where he plays the ever-helmeted Din Djarin.

That’s the role that really got his current career spike going, which is funny, because we don’t often see his face in it. As we’ve learned, Mandalorians always wear their helmets and are loathe to take them off, although the show has found a few ways to show us what’s going on under there.

Will the upcoming third season of The Mandalorian give us more face time with Din Djarin. Just ask his costar Giancarlo Esposito (Moff Gideon). “I can’t speak to that,” the actor said during a visit to GalaxyCon Raleigh. “I mean, I know he’d love to be more off the helmet, but you know, his job is to be in the helmet. You know what I mean? That, that’s the deal.”

It’s a weird situation: as an actor, you want your face out there as much as possible, but you also want to headline a Star Wars TV show, so you make sacrifices. I imagine we probably will see more of Din’s face as the series goes on, but I hope they keep exploring the part of his creed that requiring wearing a helmet at all times, because it’s pretty interesting.

The Mandalorian season 3 starts shooting “soon”

Another bonus: because Din is always masked, Pedro Pascal doesn’t necessarily have to be on set for the cameras to roll; they can just get someone else to wear the costume. “We never have to wait on Pedro,” Esposito said.

And when might we finally get to see the further exploits of Din Djarin, Baby Yoda and company? “They just finished shooting [The Book of Boba Fett], and soon they will start on season 3 of  Mandalorian,” Esposito said. This is the way.
