HBO is currently working on a whole bunch of Game of Thrones spinoffs, each of which will explore a different time period in the long history of Westeros (and Essos, in some cases).

There’s a lot of variety on display; that said, most of these shows are just in the idea phase. There’s no guarantee that they’ll actually make it to air. The exception is House of the Dragon, a series about a Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. Nearly 200 years before the start of the original series, different factions of the Targaryen family fought each other for the Iron Throne, recently vacated by King Viserys I Targaryen, played by Paddy Considine. The show has a solid cast and an impressive pedigree, but when do we get to see it?

Well, it won’t be this month. The series is shooting its first season as we speak, and just as new seasons of Game of Thrones took a while to produce, so will House of the Dragon. In fact, considering how high the mother show raised the bar for special effects on TV, we may be waiting a while between seasons of the spinoff. As you might expect, House of the Dragon involves a lot of dragons, and they take a lot of post-production magic to make happen.

House of the Dragon release date

So when does the show come out? HBO has said to expect it in 2022, but beyond that, we don’t have a firm date. In the meantime, get familiar with the cast; hopefully we’ll be seeing them in these roles for years to come!
